Wyoming Looks To Exports For Energy Markets

In the last few years, the United States has undergone a radical transformation, from energy importer to energy exporter. Liquified natural gas terminals that were built to process natural gas from abroad are being converted for export. The first tanker full of unrefined US crude oil to leave our shores in decade set sail from Texas late last month. Coal companies are increasingly relying on foreign markets to pad their balance sheets. Wyoming Public Radio held a forum recently to discuss how increased foreign exports could affect the state.

New Business Council CEO Is Optimistic

New CEO Shawn Reese.

Wyoming Business Council has hired Shawn Reese to take over as its CEO this month.  Reese replaces Bob Jensen who stepped down in March.  Reese worked for the business council for many years and recently has worked for Governor Matt Mead.  He tells Bob Beck that the state is making headway on diversifying the economy.

Governor releases plan for plugging abandoned oil and gas wells

According to new estimates from the Governor’s office, plugging abandoned oil and gas wells in Wyoming could cost anywhere from $8 to $32 million.

The smaller figure takes into account only wells that the state knows are abandoned. The larger one includes wells owned by bankrupt methane farming company Luca Technologies and the 2300 wells the state considers ‘at risk’ for abandonment.

That number of 'at risk' wells is twice previous estimates. The Governor's policy director, Shawn Reese, says the discrepancy can be traced back to the Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.
