In college football, Wyoming bolted to a 21 point lead, but had to hold on Saturday to beat New Mexico 38 to 31.

The Cowboys jumped ahead 21-0, watched New Mexico tied it at 24 early in the fourth quarter, before Brett Smith scored on back to back touchdowns including a 48 yard run that put the game away.  Smith was concerned that the offense stalled in the middle of the game, but he said once the Lobos tied it, it seemed to energize the team.

Cowboys travel to face Texas State

Sep 27, 2013

The Wyoming Cowboys football team returns to the road Saturday against Texas State.  The Cowboys are coming off of their best offensive effort in 15 years and Head Coach Dave Christensen has been preaching focus and preparation with his team this week.

He noted earlier in the week that his team hasn’t always played with the same energy every week and Christensen wants to follow-up on the Air Force win with another great effort.

Wyoming prepares to face Air Force

Wyoming and Air Force renew their college football rivalry Saturday night in Colorado Springs when the two teams meet to open the Mountain West Conference season.  Wyoming is focused on getting its offense back on track while preparing for the difficult Air Force offense.

Air Force uses a lot of option…where the Quarterback can either hand the ball off…pitch it to a running back…or run the ball himself.  This season Air Force is throwing the ball as well and Wyoming Coach Dave Christensen says it makes the Falcons difficult to play.

The Wyoming Cowboys football team beat Northern Colorado Saturday by the score of 35 to 7.  But the Cowboys offense is disappointed that it has not been more consistent.   After another slow first quarter, Wyoming scored 21 second quarter points to lead 21 to nothing.

But the offense only scored one more touchdown and failed to connect on several additional scoring opportunities.

Despite the win, Head Coach Dave Christensen complained for the second week in a row that the offense is not executing like it should.  Quarterback Brett Smith says that he has similar concerns.

Cowboys prepare for Northern Colorado

The Wyoming Cowboys football team is hoping to make it two straight wins Saturday/today when the Pokes host Northern Colorado.

U-N-C typically plays a level below Wyoming, and so the Cowboys are heavily favored to win.  But Head Coach Dave Christensen notes that Wyoming lost to a lower division team last year, and he’s reminded his players of that.  Christensen says that the Bears will present some challenges.

The ESPN/USA Today Basketball Coaches poll has ranked the unbeaten Wyoming Cowboys 25th in the nation.  The Cowboys just missed being ranked in the top 25 of the Associated Press poll by gathering just enough votes to place 27th.

Head Coach Larry Shyatt is downplaying the ranking, comparing his team to riding in a car.

Shyatt is impressed with Wyoming's focus

Wyoming Cowboys basketball Coach Larry Shyatt says he is thrilled with the way his team has remained focused throughout its 13 game winning streak.  Despite the fact that Wyoming is unbeaten, it has failed to crack the national rankings.  Shyatt said the players have not let that distract them.

“And I think they have been really, really good at being at what I called it earlier laser focused on what’s important now.  They seem to repeat the saying that we’ve had around here that happy is for March.”

Wyoming Football Coach Dave Christensen has been suspended and fined for comments he made to Air Force Football Coach Troy Calhoun following a recent loss.

Christensen’s profanity laced tirade was caught on video and today, UW Athletics Director Tom Burman fined the Coach $50,000 and suspended him for the week, including this coming Saturday’s home game against Boise State.

Wyoming football falls to 0-3

The Wyoming Cowboys football team remains winless after losing Saturday to Cal-Poly 24  to 22.

Cal Poly's Deonte Williams rushed for 187 yards, including a 65-yard score on the game's fourth play.

Wyoming rallied from an early 14 point deficit to lead 15-14 at the half.   But without injured Quarterback Brett Smith, the Cowboys struggled to get much going on offense and the defense struggled for the third straight game.

The Wyoming Cowboys football team begins play Saturday (today) at nationally ranked Texas.

The Cowboys lost to the Longhorns in Wyoming football coach Dave Christensen’s first two seasons.  He says his team is better this year, but they will have to prove it.

It’s just a different team, we’ve got more depth, we are just a better football team.  Texas is a good team too, as they have been every time we’ve played them.  Our kids have competed well for a half both times we’ve played them.  Our challenge is that we’ve got to go out and compete well for 60 minutes.

Cowboys get ready for #15 Texas

Aug 27, 2012

The Wyoming Cowboys football team opens the season at nationally ranked Texas Saturday night.  The Cowboys have spent the offseason trying to fine tune their defense, which struggled at times last season.  Head Coach Dave Christensen says his defense is showing improvement.

“I like our guys in the secondary; I think they’ve practiced well.  Not as experienced at linebacker, is probably the one place where we will gain experience as we go along. I like the way we’ve been playing up front with our defensive line.  Now we have to go out and get it done on Saturday afternoon’s.”

The Wyoming Cowgirls volleyball team got off to a fast start and defeated Presbyterian College three games to one in the first round of the UniWyo Wyoming invitational.

The Cowgirls won the first two games handily by scores of 25 to nine but lost the third game 20 to 25 before winning the match 25 to 14.

Head Coach Carrie Yerty says her team struggled in the third game because she played a number of new players and combinations.

The Cowgirls return all six starters from last year and have been picked to finish third in the Mountain West Conference.  Head Coach Carrie Yerty says the team has set some big goals this year, including an appearance in the NCAA tournament.  She says Wyoming is a very close knit team.

Wyoming's Newlin just misses Olympic medal

Aug 1, 2012

Wyoming’s Athletes will leave the London Olympics without medals.  Riverton’s Brett Newlin just missed earning a medal when the U-S eight man rowing team he was a part of placed fourth, just behind Great Britain.

Meanwhile, Cheyenne's Jennifer Nichols was eliminated Tuesday in the archery competition.

Nichols was competing in her third Olympic games.

Wyoming basketball gets key transfer

Apr 23, 2012

The Wyoming Cowboys basketball team is adding an important piece to its future.  6-5 guard Charles Hankerson Junior is transferring from the University of Alabama where he was an occasional starter to play his last two years at Wyoming.

He averaged 3-point-6 points a game in 30 games with the Crimson Tide last year and Wyoming Head Coach Larry Shyatt says he will be an important addition to what could be a young team in 2013.
