Music, Illustrated: Wyoming Symphony Teams With Artist For Season Finale

The Wyoming Symphony Orchestra in Casper has teamed up with an illustrator for this weekend’s season finale concert. Igor Stravinsky’s 'Petrouchka' was originally written as a ballet about the story of a young puppet brought to life by a wizard. Wyoming Symphony music director and conductor Matthew Savery will tell the audience the story and have the orchestra demonstrate how the music replicates human movement.

The Wyoming Symphony Orchestra's 2013-14 season opens Saturday, October 5. Over the past several years, the audience for the Casper-based ensemble has steadily increased: it’s up 25 percent in just the last season. That’s notable in an era where orchestras from Honolulu to Syracuse have filed for bankruptcy. Wyoming Symphony Orchestra produces season's first concert Saturday

The Wyoming Symphony Orchestra in Casper kicks off the season with a concert on Saturday.

Music Director Matthew Savery says they’ll be playing Paul Hindeman’s Symphonic Metamorphosis and a piece by an American composer named James Beckel, called Toccata for Orchestra.

“Both pieces are similar in that they’re really like concertos for orchestra – they really show of the virtuosic capabilities of an orchestra,” Savery said.

Later in the season, the orchestra will be collaborating with the Eugene Ballet Company to perform the ballet Swan Lake.

Wyoming Symphony Orchestra - Casper

The Wyoming Symphony Orchestra began in 1920 but did not incorporate until the 1940’s. “Musicians always find other musicians to play, and back in the 20’s they traveled long distances on dirt roads to play together” according to WSO Executive Director, Kate Tiernan. This year marks their 62nd concert season!
