Darrah J. Perez is a freelance contributor to WPR and is a published native spiritual author. Her tribal affiliation is Blackfeet, Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone. She's also a reporter for Pitchengine and County 10 news. She lives in Ethete on the Wind River Reservation.

After years of poor health services, the Northern Arapaho tribe took over the management of their health clinic from the federal government. Last week the Wind River Family Community Health Center celebrated its first anniversary.

Eight women ran in the recent tribal primary election and two have advanced to the general election. Currently, no women serve on the Northern Arapaho Business Council and only four women have ever served. 

Clarinda Calling Thunder is one of the two finalists. She said there's still a reluctance to vote women into leadership roles.

Poet Darrah Perez is a native of the Wind River Indian Reservation. Darrah’s work and collaborations honor tribal ancestry and spirituality through her writings and the creativity of the Native American community. She’s the author of two books of poetry, “It Never Happened” and “It Always Happens.” Darrah Perez lives in Ethete, Wyoming.
