Wyoming is set to take over management of wolves on Monday. Earlier this month, U.S. Fish and Wildlife decided to remove the animals from the endangered species list.
Wyoming’s management plan allows wolves to be shot on sight in most of the state. In a few areas, a license will be required.
Gov. Matt Mead says he’s pleased that the state will now have control.
“We understand that not everyone agrees with the plan, but what I continue to suggest to people is it’s scientifically sound,” Mead said. “It was recommended by the Secretary of Interior and the director of Fish and Wildlife Service. It’s been peer reviewed twice. It is a sound plan.”
Various environmental groups have said they plan to sue over the removal of federal protections for wolves.
