Wyoming's obesity rate drops slightly

A new report shows that Wyoming’s obesity rate dropped slightly in the last year.

According to the report from Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Wyoming has the ninth-lowest obesity rate in the US. The state’s adult obesity dropped from 25 percent to 24.6 percent.

Wyoming Department of Health chronic disease epidemiologist Joe Grandpre says obesity is linked to serious conditions like diabetes and heart disease. And, he says, the state’s diabetes rate actually rose by one-percent last year.

“No one can make you healthy. You have to do it yourself. You have to make that commitment to getting a little bit more physical activity and eating better, and it will show,” Grandpre says. “Obesity didn’t happen overnight in this country, and it’s not going to go away overnight. It’s going to take some time and effort, but, we can do this.”

Grandpre says people in the state tend to be physically active, but don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables.
