Happy 50th Birthday UW Tyrannosaurus Rex Statue

This Tyrannosaurus rex statue has guarded the front of the University of Wyoming Geological Museum for 50 years.

The life-size copper Tyrannosaurus rex statue that stands guard outside the University of Wyoming Geological Museum is celebrating its 50th birthday today. The museum will host two cake parties—one today over lunch, and again from noon until 2 pm Saturday. Wyoming Public Radio’s Anna Rader and Micah Schweizer visited the T. rex and heard from passers-by and well-wishers.

Fossils on private lands find collectors and critics

HOST: Wyoming was once wet, balmy, and full of creatures like dinosaurs. Today, their fossils are slowly weathering out of the ground. If the bones happen to be on public land, researchers are granted permits to dig for them and the fossils have to end up in a public repository. But on private land, anyone can dig and they can do whatever they want with the specimens. Wyoming Public Radio’s Irina Zhorov reports that commercial, or independent collectors, are sometimes eyed warily.
