Wyoming basketball coach Larry Shyatt said he is stepping down and assistant coach Allen Edwards has been hired to replace him.

Shyatt was emotional when he made his announcement but made it clear he thinks the team is in good hands. Shyatt said that in some ways he found himself out of vogue with college basketball and thought that after 43 years as a basketball coach that it was time to step aside.

Wyoming basketball Coach Larry Shyatt is not shedding any light on the dismissal of five players for the remainder of the season, but he’s hopeful that the impact will be limited.

Shyatt dismissed the five for “failing to meet the expectations of Cowboy basketball off the court.” UW officials says there will be no further comment on the details surrounding the suspensions.

Wyoming is preparing to face Utah State Wednesday in the Mountain West Conference tournament in Las Vegas. Shyatt said the team will have a shorter bench than usual and they are preparing for it.

Wyoming men’s basketball coach Larry Shyatt is furious that the Mountain West Conference did not consult with coaches or athletes before deciding this month to only allow eight of eleven conference teams to play in the Mountain West Conference basketball tournament.

The decision was made in a meeting of conference President’s and Athletic Directors and Shyatt says it was done secretly.

"No notice, no inclusion, no communication, not one word uttered to an assistant commissioner in charge of basketball, there seems to be a degree of behind the scenes plotting."

A Swedish shooting guard will join the Wyoming Cowboys basketball team next season.  Alex Aka Gorski was given a scholarship by Wyoming. He's expected to provide an offensive boost to the team right away.  Head Coach Larry Shyatt calls him the kind of deep shooter that UW needs in order to compete in the Mountain West Conference.

“He’s mature, he left home as a 9th grader and went to Stockholm to play at the highest level in his country," Shyatt says. "He’s been extremely well coached, he knows how to play off the dribble as well as within the game.”

Both the Wyoming men’s and women’s basketball teams open conference play this weekend.  The Cowboys face Nevada on the road, while the Cowgirls host the Wolfpack in Laramie.

The Cowboys have yet to win a road game, and to win in Reno, the Pokes will have to shut down Nevada’s Deonte Burton, who is averaging 22 points a game.

Shyatt is impressed with Wyoming's focus

Wyoming Cowboys basketball Coach Larry Shyatt says he is thrilled with the way his team has remained focused throughout its 13 game winning streak.  Despite the fact that Wyoming is unbeaten, it has failed to crack the national rankings.  Shyatt said the players have not let that distract them.

“And I think they have been really, really good at being at what I called it earlier laser focused on what’s important now.  They seem to repeat the saying that we’ve had around here that happy is for March.”
