State Senator Phil Nicholas won the Republic nomination for the District 10 Senate seat, defeating Anne Alexander. Nicholas won with 57 percent of the vote.

This was Alexander’s first campaign, and she says she was floored by the number of votes she got.

“I have no legislative experience at all and it made me feel confident that maybe we got some of our message out and it just kind of felt like a good vote of confidence even if we didn’t win.”

The chairman of the Wyoming Legislature's Senate Appropriations Committee is advocating a deal in which the state would buy 11,000 acres from a client of his law firm.
Republican Sen. Phil Nicholas of Laramie is meanwhile keeping alive a proposal under which the client, Doug Samuelson, would acquire a 50,000-acre ranch between Laramie and Cheyenne. The Colorado State University Research Foundation and University of Wyoming Foundation jointly own the Y Cross Ranch.

Governor Matt Mead presented his budget to the Joint Appropriations Committee and re-asserted his position that the state does not need to hurry to cut budgets.

Senate JAC Chairman Phil Nicholas has suggested cuts of five to eight percent are needed, so that the state can start setting aside money for future needs.  Governor Mead says they should decide what government services are critical and determine what money the state would need to fund those services.
