UW President Tom Buchanan held back tears today as the Dave Bostrom, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, revealed the name of what will become the new performing arts building on campus--the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts.

Buchanan says he is speechless about the dedication. But when it comes to the center, he offers plenty of praise.

“We are just completely jazzed over this event,” he enthused.

New UW laboratory facility breaks ground

UW has officially started construction on the new Michael B. Enzi laboratory facility north of campus.

UW President Tom Buchanan says the building will host introductory courses in the sciences, technology, engineering and math.

“Every undergraduate student at UW will spend time learning, studying and advancing their education here in this facility. This is not an engineering facility, it’s not an arts and science facility, this will serve every undergraduate at UW,” says Buchanan.

This weekend, the University of Wyoming’s Board of Trustees interviewed four candidates to replace President Tom Buchanan, who will retire this summer.

The search for a new UW president was originally confidential, to allow candidates to maintain security in their current jobs, but a judge in Laramie ruled that the University must release the names of its candidates to the public. In order to stay on schedule, the Board of Trustees obliged, but not before telling candidates the search would no longer be confidential.

The Albany County District Court ruled today that the University of Wyoming must release records identifying the finalists for the job of UW President.

The law suit was filed by media organizations who argued for the release of information about finalists, but the university said that releasing such information could impede their chances of getting the best candidates.

The UW Board of Trustees President, Dave Bostrom, says because of the ruling’s broad implication the university will consider an appeal to the Wyoming Supreme Court.

Wyoming Football Coach Dave Christensen has been suspended and fined for comments he made to Air Force Football Coach Troy Calhoun following a recent loss.

Christensen’s profanity laced tirade was caught on video and today, UW Athletics Director Tom Burman fined the Coach $50,000 and suspended him for the week, including this coming Saturday’s home game against Boise State.

University of Wyoming President Tom Buchanan told a gathering of University Faculty and Staff that he will retire in the Summer of 2013.  Buchanan made the announcement during the annual state of the University speech.

“This will be my last year as President of UW.  I will retire from the position of President about this time next year, at the end of the summer.   And I want you to know that it has been my honor and privilege to serve the campus community and it really is a community.  It’s been an amazing run, thank you and good afternoon. “
